About the Project

While at the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, GWJ PRINCIPALS performed with the developers of the Gateway Marketplace shopping center to establish a mechanism to provide critical financial support through the creation of the City of Detroit’s Corridor Improvement Authority and helped attract city bond funds to help pay for essential infrastructure improvements to service the site.

The new $72 million, 36-acre shopping center broke ground in 2012 and includes a $20 million, 190,000 square foot Meijer Superstore, Marshalls, Petco, K&G Fashion Superstore, Dots, McDonald’s, and a PNC Bank Branch, and is located at Eight Mile Road and Woodward Avenue, along the northern border of Detroit and adjacent to the former Michigan State Fairgrounds. The development is significant because it represents the return of a brand name grocery store and retail offerings within the city limits, and provides more shopping choices for Detroit and nearby residents. The shopping center also includes a gas station, drive-through pharmacy, and a garden center. Meijer employs about 400 people at the store.
